You deserve a break.
A REAL break. And, for the record — taking a shower and clipping your toenails does not count as self-care. That’s just basic hygiene!
As a high-achiever who cares deeply about what I do, I’ve been known to keep a punishing schedule. But the truth is this:
Making time for yourself isn’t just nice, it’s necessary if you want to create and serve on a high level — without burning out.
The more energy you put into your career, family, business, friends, and community, the more you need to prioritize self-care.
In this Unplugged episode, I’m sharing personal footage from my self-care retreat to the dreamiest wellness resort I’ve ever seen. You’ll get an MTV Cribs-style tour of my stunning casita, drool-worthy clips of Costa Rican jungle hot springs, and coffee-picking on horseback… But, more than that, I hope this inspires you to:
- Spend guilt-free time doing what brings you joy.
- Prioritize your own mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
- Take a break — because you definitely deserve it.
Click PLAY now and try to pick your jaw up off the floor.

Marie Forleo:
Okay. We made it. So this is my first international travel since…
Michele Promaulayko:
Since everything?
Marie Forleo:
Since everything. So we’ve got a couple hours flight. What is it like?
Michele Promaulayko:
Like five.
Marie Forleo:
Okay. Five hours flight. I’m going to do my meditation. I’m going to do my writing. I’m going to do all the… You’re gonna work on your article.
Michele Promaulayko:
Yep.
Marie Forleo:
And then…
Michele Promaulayko:
We’ll be in paradise!
Marie Forleo:
And then in paradise.
We don’t have Wi-Fi. Just like, we basically lost it. So I’m… Coffee. Writing.
Now, we are arriving to a very tiny plane. What’d you think?
Michele Promaulayko:
It’s a little baby plane.
Marie Forleo:
It’s a baby plane. I’m not sure how I feel about baby planes.
That’s a very… Oh, there’s a propeller on it. Okay. Okay.
The smallest plane I’ve ever been on. We’re about to take off.
Chele, we made it!
Michele Promaulayko:
Yeah. That was a little harrowing. Not going to lie.
Marie Forleo:
It was great.
So, this trip is turning out amazing already. I’m going to show you, but I walk up to where the snacks are, which are included. It’s my favorite word ever. Included. I’m having an almond cappuccino. And then wait, I have to show you this because I was like, oh my God, I’m looking at this cake. I need a snack. I’m hungry. Do you see that gorgeous cake? First of all, there’s all kinds of snacks. Right? All kinds of snacks. And, oh, it’s like, it’s amazing. That cake. I’m like, oh, what is that? And they’re like, oh, that’s a gluten-free cake. I’ve basically died and gone to Costa Rica heaven. Come on.
So seriously, I just got dropped off at my casita at AltaGracia. I am blown away. I’ve been a lot of places. I traveled to a bunch of different types of resorts. And I have to say, you have got to see my casita because it is beyond.
Clearly people get their party on here. It’s not my thing for right now. But you come over and look at this, look at this. I’ve got a nice little kitchen and a wonderful little French press and some Costa Rican coffee. Here’s my living room y’all. What? Dining table, the best pineapple ever, check out my living room. Oh my God. But this is where things get real. Check out the bedroom. What? Come on, come on. And then out there is a little private pool, which I’ll show you later.
So beautiful. This is a bathroom and a half. It’s like, oh wow, what a nice bathtub. But then you’re like, wait, what, how the hell did that happen? An enormous tub, these incredible robes, which by the way, oh my God, good Jesus. This just feels so good. And hey, it’s me. I’ve been to Costa Rica a lot in my life. Like, a lot, a lot. I think probably at least seven or eight times, but I’ve never been to this part of the country and I’m really excited to be here. So let the wellness adventure begin.
I spent a few hours in the hot tub, took the most amazing shower, like ever, and now getting ready to go to our first night’s dinner. I’ve spent so much of my life, just with my head down, working, working, working, working, working. I made myself a promise that this was going to be different. After all the health challenges I went through. No mas. Making time for myself, taking care of myself in a whole new way and I’m having the time of my life.
And you can hear those beautiful sounds. All of nature. Yeah.
I’m being welcomed to a breakfast on my little veranda. You want to check it out? It’s really great. Oh, omelet and avocado toast. Come on, this place is just ridiculous. I’m going to make a little coffee, do a little writing, but you gotta keep your eye on your health because it’s important. If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything. And now I’m going to go invest in that health even more. I’m going to go take a hike with Michele and we’re going to explore this beautiful resort.
I had such an amazing morning. We’re going to talk about it and we’re going to head off to the stables.
Michele Promaulayko:
I know, how was yoga? I slept in.
Marie Forleo:
I went to bed super early and then woke up super early. Did my morning pages.
Michele Promaulayko:
Did so much more than me by this hour.
Marie Forleo:
No, no, no. I’m an early bird. I did yoga, which was awesome. I did my meditation and now we’re going to go.
Michele Promaulayko:
Horseback riding.
Marie Forleo:
Come on.
Michele Promaulayko:
Oh, wow. Wow.
Marie Forleo:
Okay. So I just want to do a little quick wrap on day three. I feel so good. First of all, I’m going to turn the camera around because what I’m looking at is so stunning. Oh my goodness. Do you ever take your camera out on your phone because you see a sunset or you see the moon or you see something so spectacular in nature. And then when you try and capture it’s like, yeah it’s not really what it looks like. Anyway, today was so beautiful. I hadn’t moved my body like that since I’d been here. So it was really, really great. Done some hiking, tons of walking, all kinds of stuff like that, but not really a dig-in yoga class so, it was spectacular.
Our last day, we’re doing a river bath experience.
Michele…
Michele Promaulayko:
Look at this situation.
Marie Forleo:
It is a situation right now.
Michele Promaulayko:
So the fire’s heating the water?
Guide:
Yeah. Yeah. The fire…
Michele Promaulayko:
Wow.
Guide:
Yeah. The cool water from the river comes this way and becomes, in this part, in the hot water.
Marie Forleo:
All right. We’re going to get changed and make it happen.
We’re leaving. So sad, but it’s been so amazing.
Emily, are you going to miss us?
Emily:
Too much.
Marie Forleo:
She’s like, get them out of here.
