Great advice nobody wants to hear when things get hard:

“Look on the bright side!”

“It could be worse.”

“Everything happens for a reason.”

When life knocks us down, we need more than just trite phrases and a pat on the back. We need connection and comfort. Deep listening and understanding. And help finding meaning in life again.

My MarieTV guest today is a Holocaust survivor who knows — from her unimaginable experience — how to find joy in dark, confusing, or painful experiences.

Dr. Edith Eva Eger survived Auschwitz and went on to become an eminent psychologist and PTSD expert, not to mention one of my favorite MarieTV guests of all time.

She wrote her first book at age 90 and published The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life two years later — a book I truly believe should be required reading for all human beings! This is not hyperbolic. I’ve read thousands of books, and I say this with confidence.

Edie writes, “I can't say that everything happens for a reason, that there's a purpose in injustice or suffering, but I can say that pain, hardship, and suffering are the gift that helps us grow, and learn, and become who we are meant to be."

In this conversation, Edie shares her secret to finding the gift in everything — especially those painful, difficult, and heartbreaking experiences.

You’ll learn:

  • What to say to yourself when you get up in the morning.
  • How Edie survived Auschwitz and STILL found joy in the darkness.
  • 2 simple words to comfort someone in pain.
  • The secret to staying young (and publishing a book at 92!)
  • How to find meaning in your life, no matter what.

Watch ‘til the end and you’ll get to see us both high-kick for joy.

Now, it’s your turn.

What’s your biggest aha or takeaway from today’s episode with Dr. Edith Eger?

As Edith writes in The Gift, "I now recognize the most damaging prison is in our mind, and the key is in our pocket. It's possible to break free from whatever holds us back. It's not easy, but so worth it."

In the comments below, let me know:

  1. One thing that’s giving you hope right now.
  2. A moment you found the gift in a challenging experience.

Your words are a gift to this community. Thank you for being here and for being YOU.
